We are pleased to announce an industry first, flush trim router bit with a 1.5" cutter! After scouring the internet and specialty tool suppliers to find such a bit we quickly realized it did not exist. So we decided to have them custom made for us. While the cutting diameter is 3/8" the shaft size of the bit is 1/2" allowing it to work with most routers and collet adapters that accept 1/2" bits.

If you are using our router templates with 1" thick stock or lower we recommend our standard 1/4" High Performance Template Router Bit. However, if you are wanting to use our templates with thicker stock (up to 1.5") you know that using a standard flush trim router bit won't work. You COULD use a super short flush trim router bit with a handheld router and go layer by layer, but Crafted Elements is the time SAVING company, not the time wasting company.

There is just ONE caveat that you need to be aware of. Our templates are designed specifically to work with 1/4" diameter flush trim router bits, we design all tight corners and crevices to have a 0.125" radius (so a 1/4" cutter can meet the template exactly). If you using a router bit with a 3/8" diameter cutter (and bearing) you are not going to be able to exactly replicate tight inside corners of certain templates. For the vast majority of our templates (that dont have super tight crevices and corners) this isn't going to make a difference, as the bearing will maintain contact with the template around the entire perimeter. Templates with tight inner corners will result in "resolution loss" due to not being able to replicate those tighter crevices exactly.

The natural question is, why not make an extra long 1/4" router bit? At that length it would be unstable and taking off 1.5" of material in one pass is simply too much stress to put on a thinner bit (which is why these bits don't exist!). We needed to up the diameter to 3/8" (on the cutter) and 1/2" (on the shaft) to give it the stability required to cut through material up to 1.5" thick, reliably and safely.

Additionally, unlike our 1/4" diameter flush trim router bit which has a down-cut design, our 3/8" diameter bit (1/2" shaft) has an up-cut design. This profile generally doesn't produce as nice of a finish (requiring additional sanding) but due to the amount of material being removed and the use with generally thicker stock, a down-cut profile would have resulted in unpredictable performance such as router-kick back and the router bit running off with your workpiece. Not cool.

Plus, it's coated with our exclusive "Cool Cut Coating" system. A specializing multi-layer coating that reduces the friction between the bit and your material. The reduction of friction results in a reduction of heat, which results in a reduction of burn marks on your material and reduces wear on the bit.

In the end every bit eventually wears out and needs replaced, but a Cool Cut Coated bit stays sharper for longer, ensuring a clean trimmed finish with as little effort as possible.

This bit is engineered to be run at no more than 18,000 rpm. If you have a fixed speed router, check the rating on it before using this bit. Running the bit above its rated maximum rotational speed can lead to breakage or fracturing of the bit.
