Thinking about building your own router sled after seeing a guy from a YouTube video do it? It's understandable, we all like to DIY and not everyone can justify or afford the cost of our premium router sleds made with linear motion components.

However, building your own sled out of plywood takes time and effort, and plywood isn't exactly a buttery smooth, low friction material. Enter the Crafted Elements EcoSled. Now in its second generation, this economically priced router sled is a perfect option for DIY'ers on a budget that is a step above what could be built using only plywood.

The not-so-secret secret lies in the construction of the EcoSled. The HDPE (high density polyethylene) plastic is a low friction material. This means the sled is going to slide easier along your benchtop and your router plate is going to slide easier within the router sled carriage when compared to a home-brew plywood design. With a coefficient of friction of around 0.20, it's notably more slippery than wood on wood (which ranges from 0.45-0.60!).

The second generation of the EcoSled can be used "freehand" by simply sliding it along your flat bench or worktop that your project has been secured to. You can also install 3/4" wide mitre tracks on top of your table to keep the EcoSled in a more conventional and easy to control fixed X axis, so it only moves left or right without shifting up or down. The side risers on the EcoSled conveniently sit right in the middle of standard 3/4" mitre track (similar to a T track, but has a wider opening). Optional mitre tracks are not sold by us but are available from other tool retailers.

The EcoSled router carriage is near-fully assembled right out of the box. Just attach the side risers to the router carriage and 4 x M6 knobs to hold them in place on the threaded rods protruding from the router carriage assembly. You can be up and running right out of the box in just seconds.

Our tri-level side risers contain three notches to allow you to adjust the height of the router carriage from 1,2 or 3 inches of clearance, allowing you to mill pieces up to 3" thick without having to worry about a router collet extension.

The EcoSled comes in two different sizes, small (24" total length) and large (47" total length). Be aware that the total length of the router sled carriage does not equal the total maximum travel of your router within the router carriage. Using a 2" diameter spoilboard / slab levelling bit you can mill pieces up to 19" in width with the small version, and 42" in width with the large version. These maximums are based on a 6" diameter router plate and a 2" diameter bit. Using a smaller diameter bit will reduce the maximum slab levelling width accordingly.

We've taken the effort and guesswork out of building a basic router sled, and fabricated plastic components wherever there is motion or friction. The result is a very affordable, ridiculously easy to use router sled. No, the end result isn't comparable to our premium router sleds made of steel and aluminum, but when cost is the driving factor our EcoSled fits the bill!

Be sure to select the "Small (24")" or "Large (47")" size from the drop down menu above before adding to your cart to ensure you purchase the size you are looking for.

Router Compatibility

The EcoSled works with nearly any router on the market. The router carriage channel is just over 6" in width allowing it to accommodate most routers, from small trim routers all the way up to large 3hp+ full size routers. Note: You may need to remove the handles from your router to fit within the router carriage. The router carriage base channel is 2.125" wide to accommodate router bits up to 2.0" in diameter. If you want to use your trim / palm router with the EcoSled we have a collection of 6" diameter router bases that are compatible with this setup.

Which Crafted Elements Sled Should I Choose?

Having choice is great...except when it's not. We have three different router sleds available in our product line including the EcoSled, our trim router sled and our original, full size router sleds constructed out of metal and using industrial grade linear motion components.

For simplicity lets look at the pros and cons of the EcoSled compared to our original full size router sleds.

Easy to use

The sled is perfect for my crafting projects since I don't have access to a planer. I do wish there were some vents in the side panels so the routing debris could escape. I notice that the router with the 6" base plate starts to drag a bit after a few passes and I have to stop and clean out the sled. I know this could be solved by having a vacuum attachment to my router but I don't have that luxury as of now. Overall, I love the sled.

It works fine for what I needed. For the price and a one off project it’s good enough

It is definitely not as robust as the full sized sled, but for the small stuff I do, it is most certainly adequate.

Great addition to my shop.

I don’t have the space in my workshop for a large thickness planer so this jig is a perfect alternative. It allows me to edge glue then flatten pieces that I’ve made with my Crafted Elements router templates.

I had a log slice about 5-6 inches thick and not a even cut. i saw these sleds online and decided to order one to try it. It took some thinking and making jigs to use it on a work bench. After this was done it worked well. I'm sure it's not as good as the other more expensive one they have and does take some time to use. i have also used it for working cutting boards that I've been building instead of using the planer. I can make the boards to about 1/2 inch to 1 inch longer only after glued just in case there is minor splintering at ends. I only do a small amount of cutting boards so these 2 sled sizes are great for this application. The customer support is also great. There was a problem with one of the side pieces but was past the warranty. I explained the situation that I don't use it very often and the pieces are not sold separately. I was going to order a new one and the next day I saw the company had ordered a new one for me no cost. Appreciated that.

Works as well as I hoped. I’ve used it several times and have zero issues/complaints.

Works great !

Great smaller alternarive option for the fill size flattening jig. Works great

hi havent had the opportunity to use the sled yet but it does look very simple to use. thanks. i like your products and the delivery system is fast.

Excellent

Works well.

Easy to set up easy to use

Sled has a slight bow in the middle and support didn’t respond to any emails. Terrible customer service. Will not be purchasing from crafted elements again.

Looks great, I haven't used it yet.

It is definitely helpful for flattening slabs. Very easy to use. And takes up little space.

Product arrived with a slight bow in the middle which means everything I “flatten” will will have a slight cup in the middle. I emailed 3x, tried to send a message on instagram, but no answer. Extremely poor customer service. You need to notify within 3d for defective, yet no one has responded in almost 2 weeks. Never purchasing from this company again. This was a cheaper purchase before making a larger investment, which won’t be happening now. Quality control seems to be lacking and customer service nonexistent.

Works perfectly and is well constructed!

It work real good

Very excited about using this product I hope it will do exactly what I wanted it for

Well made and easy to use

The new router base fit as expected and the flatting fixture is very adjustable and very stable.

I was able to complete my project in half the time with limited sanding. I am so glad I finally made the purchase.

I was a little nervous at first, having never used a router before It was a blessing for my project thank you

Working fine to flatten lard boards

You guys have the best product

product worked very well for my specific needs, definitely a worthwhile purchase.

Easy set-up; solid construction; minimal deflection. Very happy with it

Not enough adjustment in height. Had to modify my router and still didn’t work properly

Outstanding product. Great choice for small shops.

Haven’t used it yet. Looks good

very simple and works well

I was looking for something affordable to prepare blanks for turning and trimming rings after gluing them. This meets both needs. Also, if you look close the end plates of the sled are upside down. I found that this gives me 1.5” and 2.5” clearances as well as the 1”, 2”, and 3” designed heights. This allows for the strain on the router blade to be less as I can insert it farther into the collet. A great product and a $1,000 cheaper than a drum sander.

Love the router sled. Works great but would be nice if the minimum slab thickness were a little less. One of the ways I used it was to easily smooth out both sides of this End Grain Cutting Board I made. Worked beautifully with no tear out andminimal sanding after.

Works just like the YouTube videos!!

My first board. 👍

I bought this thinking it would work fine, but i had lots of trouble with flexing and it ended up not being very useful. I ended up purchasing on of your higher end router sled systems. I wish i could get a refund on this. Thanks

Great product.
