Our line of bowl and tray acrylic router templates help you create uniquely shaped trays, dishes and catchalls out of thick pieces of wood with the help of a pocketing router bit.

Simply mount the router template on your wood (1.25"-2.5" thick is most ideal), and use a handheld plunge router and pocketing bit to slowly router out the interior pockets, one level at a time. For general pocketing and recesses we recommend the Amana Tool 45983 (1/2“) radiused bit (for smoothed interior corners and edges) or the Amana Tool 45460-S (1/2”) 45475-S (3/8”) bits if you want flat bottom interior edges. You can also initially use a drill press and Forstner bit to quickly remove material before routering to reduce pocketing time with your router.

The dog paw print template is unique in the fact that it also can function as a general inlay template. You can create large resin backfilled inlays using the same bits mentioned above (and not going very deep) or you can use it to create solid wood inlays with the help of a router bit inlay kit with a bushing.

This tray has two sizes available, a large and a small. Select the size you wish from the drop down menu before adding to your cart.

Crafted Elements Acrylic Router Templates

The Crafted Elements line of laser cut acrylic router templates are precision cut templates designed especially for woodworkers. Unless you have access to a CNC machine in your shop these templates are the easiest, most accurate and most repeatable way to shape wood and wood+resin pieces into things like charcuterie boards, serving trays, handles, functional art and more.

Like our line of maker molds, we designed these templates to save you time and boost production efficiency. These take the guesswork out of shaping and fabricating. By simply pulling one of these clear templates off the shelf and lining it up on your material you’ll instantly know how your final piece will look before you even start cutting and shaping.

We laser cut all of our templates out of long lasting and durable 1/4” thick cast acrylic to ensure the bearing on your router bit has enough surface area to glide on. These templates can be used over and over and will quickly become a go-to tool in your shop.

Reduce errors, inaccuracy and problems with making complex shapes perfectly symmetrical. We even have templates to match many of our awkwardly shaped silicone molds, so you can cut and shape pieces of wood to fit perfectly snug within our molds before you pour your resin.

All you need is a template, flush trim router bit (like this one) and a router table. Even the most basic routers are capable of shaping materials up to 1.5” thick.

Using our templates is easy:

  1. Place the template over your material (usually wood or wood & epoxy resin). Trace the shape of the template onto your piece.
  2. Using a jig saw, scroll saw or a band saw (where appropriate) cut out the rough shape you traced onto your material, leaving between 1/16” and ¼” outside of the perimeter.
  3. Affix the template to your material using hot glue or two sided tape like XFasten woodworking tape from Amazon.
  4. Install your appropriately sized flush trim bit into the router in your router table such as the Crafted Elements 1/4" High Performance Spiral Down Cut Flush Trim Bit. Be sure your router bit has a blade long enough for the height of your material. Line up the bearing of your router bit with the acrylic template.
  5. Turn on your router and glide the template along the bearing of your router bit, allowing the router to remove the excess material on your piece, effectively duplicating the shape of the router template.
  6. Carefully remove the template from your material. Remove the two sided tape or hot glue. Sand any leftover residue off of your project. You can use goo-gone or other adhesive remover on the acrylic templates for any stubborn or sticky residue.

I purchase most of my acrylic templates from Crafted Elements. I own Rustic and Renewed Decor (rusticandreneweddecor.ca), where I sell handcrafted rustic and farmhouse décor. For my charcuterie and cutting boards, I prefer unique shapes rather than traditional rectangular designs. I recently started making carved trays using my trim router, and the dog paw was my first attempt. I purchased both the dog paw and bone templates because the finished pieces can serve two purposes—as functional trays and as special items for pet lovers. I also plan to use the templates to make flat charcuterie boards. Instead of carving a deep tray, I will create a shallower recessed area and fill it with epoxy. I look forward to checking back and seeing what new templates you add!

This is a leash/collar hanger I made out of Purple Heart with one of my templates for my woodworking business. It turned out great, too! The templates I own from CE have been superb!

The item itself (paw print template) is great, but alas my skills with a router wasn't up to the task. I'm still a raw newbie using a router and it jumped on me and gouged/shattered a part of the template. Entirely my fault because I tried to take too deep a cut at one go. Live and learn I guess. Also was using a really hard wood making the problem worse. In future will get a new template and then PRACTICE on some softwood scrap material until I get my technique polished. But as to the template itself, seems a great product.

Shipping was quick I needed it for a gift and got it in plenty of time. The size is just right and sanding with a finger attachment on my oscillating sander was a perfect fit in the paw print.

Pattern was easy to apply with template tape and remained stable. Pattern bit easily followed the template and had no problems in the tighter curves. Very happy with this and plan on making a few more with varing wood types.

The template worked really well, it arrived well packaged too! The attached photo is the end result, black walnut on the bottom, and cherry on top. I'm happy with the results, made a great Mother's Day gift for my daughter to give.
