Since the beginning of Crafted Elements the biggest hurdle for new customers to overcome has been to accept the higher cost of the premium quality, thick and heavy silicone molds that we make.
The vast majority of our molds are made in-house at our location in Ontario, Canada and around 6-7% of our SKU's are manufactured overseas. However with the rise of Chinese e-commerce sites like Temu and Aliexpress, whose sellers regularly steal photos from our website and use them to sell their own inferior products, we wanted to come up with a lower cost series of molds to bridge the gap between the near paper-thin molds offered on Temu or Alibaba and our original heavy duty molds.
The Crafted Elements Economy molds series, a.k.a "Eco Molds" are still made with a premium 40A shore silicone, but are engineered with 4-5mm thick walls, wide top flanges, and side ribs (where required) to ensure they remain straight and stable even when filled with fluid resin. Don't mistake them for a cheap Temu / Aliexpress mold. They are thicker and superior than most of what's available on those marketplaces, plus we ship these molds flat. We dont fold or roll them up during shipping and expect our customers to deal with permanently deformed molds for the sake of lowering shipping costs.
We reduce the amount of silicone it takes to produce the mold to save costs, while maintaining a design that doesn't sacrifice the structure and support of the mold walls. It can't be understated how important this is when using a dense and costly fluid like epoxy resin. The hydrostatic pressure put on the mold walls can easily warp / bow or bulge the walls if they are too thin or not supported. It's not an issue with molds that are 1/4" or even up to 1/2" deep, but once you are using deeper molds it can mean the difference between the success or failure of your project.
The Eco Molds are a perfect solution for budget conscious makers, woodworkers and artists who want a better option than the low quality Temu/Aliexpress products as well as people who are just getting into making wood and resin art and want to experiment before investing in our premium silicone molds.
Crafted Elements Silicone Molds
The last mold you will ever need. Created just for makers, resin artists and wood workers, these time saving flexible yet durable silicone molds significantly cut down on the setup and demolding time usually involved with other molds. Silicone molds are superior to wood and tuck tape, and HDPE molds because:
- They can be used with epoxy resin, resin and wood, concrete, Jesmonite, plaster and more.
- They never need assembled, or disassembled. Saving huge amounts of time.
- The strength and flexibility of the molds allows you to insert and remove pieces of wood easily.
- The corners and edges never need sealed.
- When using wood, the wood stays in place, tight in the mold if you cut it 1/16" larger than the width of the mold. Alternatively use our HDPE block kit in conjunction with hand weights or clamps to keep your wood from up in your resin. The HDPE blocks dont stick to set resin and are easily and cleanly removed.
- The mold is heat resistant to ~450F. Avoid direct contact with the flame of a torch. Briskly wave your torch or use a heat gun to pop bubbles.
- The molds are reusable. However silicone molds do have a finite lifespan when used with epoxy resin, but getting 20-30+ castings out of the mold can be expected when they are properly cared for and a non-silicone based mold release spray is used.
- Like HDPE, epoxy resin does not stick to silicone. However, the heat generated by the exothermic reaction and the chemicals in epoxy resin are very harsh to all silicone molds. Additionally, if part of your epoxy has not fully set due to improper mixing, the epoxy can become bonded to the mold. Both of these factors can lead to mold tear out when removing your piece from the mold, leading to pits and tears on the surface of the mold. This is why we a non-silicone based mold release spray is required before each pour. To help prevent tear out and to increase the life of your mold. We use the 'MG Chemicals 8329 Non-Silicone Epoxy Mold Release', 'Mann Ease Release 200' or 'Mann Ease Release 300'. Cooking spray, vaseline, silicone based sprays or sprays designed for urethane or polyester products should NEVER be used. Using a proper, non-silicone based mold release can mean the difference between getting only a couple of uses from your mold to 20, 30 or more.
